Welcome to BAAGS web site
Who are we ?
We are BAAGS , Borders Asperger & Autism Group Support, a recognised Scottish Charity No; SC032508.
In June 2004 a few parents formed BAAGS (having been known previously as Borders Autism Support Group (1998)). We had some new brochures printed, typed a media statement and bombarded as many people as possible, mainly via e-mail, with our information asking them to forward it on etc.
We owe grateful thanks to the Golden Lions, Galashiels, who allow us use of the room every month, free of charge. Kevin Wyse @ Inhouse Design for the design and printing of our information booklet(s). There are so many people who have given their support to us, in many different ways, small donations, free publicity, membership subscriptions, advice…the list goes on. We thank them all, and wish them to know that without them all, BAAGS would not be able to run. We appreciate all help and support that has been given.
The committee is made up of the Chair, the Secretary, Treasurer and member advisors. Around 4 - 6 people attend the monthly meetings (on average). Some months there might be as many as 8, or as few as 1 !
“Autism isn’t something a person has, or a ‘shell’ that someone
is trapped inside. There’s no normal child hidden behind the autism.
Autism is a way of being. It is pervasive; it colours every experience,
every sensation, perception, thought, emotion and encounter, every
aspect of existence… This is important so take a moment to consider
it: Autism is a way of being. It is not possible to separate the
person from the autism.” Jim Sinclair (1993) Autism Network
